morning walk

Adirondacks

stuffing arthritic feet
in socks and sneakers
we tripped out hand in hand
spry try mouths tad dry
as summer sun’s ascent
had begun

huffing puffing
we made it up and down
gentle slopes often curving
then my body cried out
enough is enough
we are done

we made our way back
when suddenly I saw
the sun’s rays hit
tender green leaves
highlighting nature’s
intricate filigree

its moments such as these
that spell magic for me, then
I saw a big shaggy dog tied
outside and its mournful eyes
conversed with mine, both
our throats parched in heat

swallowing lump
in mine, I left
my four footed
friend, mentally
hugging it -soul
to soul -that’s it
