Memory Etchings

Flipping open my pc notebook with thumb and forefinger
I decided to release, bring up for air, memories that linger
In the hard drive of the memory bank in my aging head
Many vied for attention shouldering, pushing to get ahead
Released like blown bubbles they danced merrily in the air
Making me happy, bringing much joy as I relived this fare
Relishing moment to moment, many refrains from my lair

Those rides high up on dad’s shoulder and bounces in the air
Those trips to the beaches, shells and coconut shy at local fair
Cha-cha, jive, tango, jump rope, hop-scotch n many a scrabble
Drama skits, crying bouts, dashes for choice seats n scrambles
Earnest prayers, innocent briberies for outstanding marks dole
Praying to pantheon of powers that be for boons in many a cajole
Mother’s warm lap, grandparents abundant love, tiny bankrolls

Custard, rice pudding, plum cakes, marzipan candies and cheeses
Festivals, new clothes, western and historical movies’ first releases
Refrains of popular Beatles, Elvis Presley songs and birthday bashes
Cultural events, family tours, monsoon splashing in colorful galoshes
Nursery rhymes, noisy frolics, capture of fireflies in the tiny kerchiefs
Stern prim nuns and cane beatings, tears of mortification and bruises
Weddings, goodbyes, good cries, hot coffee before exams, crash courses

School picnics, hoarse voices, gossiping neighbors and best home friends
Matching the Joneses, childish pretensions to keep up with the latest trends
Growing pains, body awareness, sudden shy moments and awful realizations
Ogling boys, cheeky sniggers, no more scrambling up trees n other limitations
First makeup application, first thrill of dancing with boys, many new revelations
Goodbye to tomboy days, sweet tearful regrets, maturing, enjoying newer slogans
Hearty laughs, many gaffes, sibling rivalry, old time chivalry n different passions
Time took to its heels and sped by suddenly snapping me out of my reverie
Joy n happiness coursed through my veins with  fast rush of adrenalin, aptly
Logging out of  pc of my mind, my personal notebook I put away with care
These moments can be rewound n enjoyed as long as mind stays sharp I declare
I sharpen my quills, feed it with many new thrill and mind games and challenges
Hoping and praying that with blessings and goodwill of all, I come up with aces
Regrets, have none, nothing can be undone, rolling with dice, living as life has spun.

The hurricane flooded me out of a lot of memorabilia,
but it can’t flood out the memories.

To reminisce with my old friends, a chance to share
some memories, and play our songs again.

We do not remember days, we remember moments.
The richness of life lies in memories we have forgotten
