Loneliness

A canker in my tooth
A constant nagging ache
A hankering for something
A kindred spirit for sharing

Where do I seek this paragon
Among people, I am lonely
All by myself, I am lonely
My contrariness mystifies

My head has a melee of thoughts
Always bursting at seams bereft never
Always seeking company selectively
For my needs are my very own

The other day I found someone
Liked the company but briefly
Soon became restless losing interest
My butterfly persona sickens me

It has now dawned that it all futile
No two people can ever be alike
Everyone’s thought process is unique
So I should accept people as they are

Good, funny, frivolous, comic, vain
Irritating, annoying, cloying, pseudo
Loving, giving, humane, kind, forgiving
Friendly, fake, honest or cheating
And yet so very human!
“Our language has wisely sensed the two sides of being alone.  It has created the word “loneliness” to express the pain of being alone.  And it has created the word “solitude” to express the glory of being alone.”
