Essence

Essence

Essence of your love
Is still green and fresh
A fragrant bouquet nestled
Close to my grieving heart

You the gentle giant
Guardian angel hovering
Around my diminutive self
Salving my growing pains

You left you stayed
I was bereft, then not
Font of your love still flows
Forcefully in mind’s cave

Marzipan, mangoes, cheeses
Sweets, myriad colored tonics
These remind me of you dad
As do monkey bars, garden swings

You filled my childhood
With infinite joy and love
Your shy demeanor couldn’t restrain
Itself from your youngest girl child

You held yourself back from my older
Sisters believing it to be conduct unbecoming
My ailing frail self became the sole receptacle
Of your paternal love, inviting fierce sibling envy

Time and tide finally bore you away
Your bestowed gift my alphanumeric strength
As are all the scintillating memories of my
Unbridled zesty childhood and its scrapes

Love you and miss you dear dad
Today and every day, no matter
How old I get, I remain apple
Of your gleaming eye even today

Essence of your love
Is still green and fresh
A fragrant bouquet nestled
Close to my grieving heart
