shank of night

suddenly
awakening
heartbeat
blubbering
realized it was
still shank of night
quizzed self
gnawing on bones
of whys wherefores
suddenly shivered goosed
flesh alerted as all over skin
continued crawling…
was something
lurking here…right now
had flapping black birds
ominous buzzing sounds
leached over from scary
movies of yesterday/night?
attempts
at sinking back
into sleep’s folds
became useless
finally giving up
gingerly embraced
today’s body…

is it a portend of closed envelope events….still wondering…

ravens in dream

harbingers are you
of that lurking grim reaper?
you never scared me then,
you won’t
scare me now
go ahead I dare you
snuff my candle,
little do you know
how this soul longs
to cleave unto
it’s eternal
blue
beloved

special journey -on gods and temples

Durgiana Temple Amritsar

Overfed
Shopping bags
left
In safe keeping
along-with
savvy smarts
~
Body, soul
Surgically
scrubbed
left home
for HIS
Abode
~
Eagerly stepped on
Hallowed ground
As memory engaged in
light shadow plays, entering
temple early, in a waned
day
~
During initial
construction, it was
Believed that the lord
Had visited in person
Leaving behind baby foot-
prints on wet pavements
~
reverently touching these
Foot prints, crossed over
Temple threshold with still shut
Trio of inner Sancto Santorum(s)
It was ten minutes to evening
Prayers, we stayed put
~
Chants flurried mind’s walls
Riding memories’ tsunami, I let
Everything flood body soul inside out
Drowning, drenching, cleansing~
Utter feeling of bliss reigned
Eventually, I came back to “me”

II

Sun had
Arisen set
We arose
Setting out
Seeking
Blessings
From HE
Who stays
Wide awake
~
Witching
Hour
Bewitching
Just before
Midnight,
Crowds had
Left, left
Had fallen asleep
~
Weaving through
Snores, we held
Our breath as the golden
Temple shone in three
Quarter moonlight
~
Over fed chubby
Finny friends
Undulated in
Holy Sarovar
(pond)
~
iridescence
On the move
Weaving in out
Of the waters
And a feeling
Of benediction
Stole inside
All it’s own
~
Hushed
In every
Which way
Light of foot
we sped
Home
~

Varanasi also known as Benares or Kashi is a city on banks of holy river Ganges  Some Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities  in the world and the oldest- holiest city in India  Hindu God Lord Shiva says, “The three worlds form one city of mine, and K??? is my royal palace therein.Varanasi grew as an important industrial centre, famous for muslin, silk fabrics, perfumes, ivory works, and sculpture.

During the time of Gautama Buddha (born circa 567 BC), Varanasi was the capital of the Kingdom of Kashi and Buddha is believed to have founded Buddhism here around 528 BC when he gave his first sermon, “Turning the Wheel of Law”, at nearby Sarnath.

Mind bent

malleable maybe
pliable not
obdurate maybe
inflexible not
life’s frequent kicks
have honed survivor instincts
such -that sleep awake
I manage to deflect
lethal arrows
aimed my way
or is it the angels
hovering over shoulders
steering to safety
know not ~
